Photo- OSPREY heading home with his catch. These sea birds of prey were extremely rare on Long Island less then 15 years ago. Thanks to Long Island’s Environmental Defense Fund’s successful fight to ban DDT in the 1970’s, osprey nests now are common along our trails. There are at least 5 nests along our Greenbelt Trail in the Connetquot River and Heckscher State Parks.

HEADLINES is about the people who use and care for our trails and love the outdoors. Send us your photos, announcements and stories so we can share them. Send information, photos, to manfredonia2@optonline.net or to the Greenbelt Office, PO Box 5636, Hauppauge, NY 11788 ligreenbelt@verizon.net Thanks for your efforts and support of these beautiful Long Island Trails!
To find the Greenbelt Office in Blydenburgh Park: from Route 25-25A in Smithtown, go south on Brooksite Dr.; at next light (New Mill Rd.), turn right to park entrance at end of road….From Route 347, find Brooksite Dr. between the 347-454 junction and Rt. 111; head north on Brooksite to New Mill Rd.; go left to the park. Follow the paved path at the west end of the lot to the Blydenburgh-Weld House.
The Blydenburgh -Weld House (1821) is the LIGBTC Headquarters in Blydenburgh County Park. David Weld, a successful Manhattan Investment banker, bought the estate (Now the Park) from the Blydenburgh’s in 1936. The Blydenburgh’s owned the homes, the mill and land from the late 1700’s to 1936. The Welds owned the land until 1963 when a test of wills between David Weld and Robert Moses ended with the land becoming a County Park.
William Floyd Weld, son of David and his mother, Mary Floyd Weld, (a direct descendant of William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence), grew up in a Gatsby like world of Long Island before he moved to Massachusetts. He served as Governor of that state from 1990 through 1996. His political base in Massachusetts included the law firm of Hill & Barlow, the Boston firm that defended Sacco and Vanzetti. William Weld’s ex-wife, Susan Roosevelt, is President Teddy Roosevelt’s great granddaughter.
New Maintenance Coordinator- There is a new Maintenance Coordinator for the 33 mile long Suffolk Greenbelt Trail that runs from the Great South Bay to Sunken Meadow State Park. If you are already a maintainer or wish to be a maintainer, say hello to David Reisfield at Reisfield@verizon.net
Notice- The Long Island Greenbelt FOOT TRAILS are designed strictly as WALKING TRAILS, maintained by your Parks Departments and volunteers. USE OF THESE TRAILS FOR ACTIVITIES OTHER THAN HIKING SHOULD BE CONSIDERED STUPID, IRRESPONSIBLE AND DANGEROUS for everyone! Remember, you use the trails completely at your own risk.
POLITICAL ACTION - The Long Island Greenbelt Trail is a nonpolitical hiking organization that does not back candidates or take part in political lobbying. We work with all good people, political or otherwise, to protect the trails we have established. Our mission is protection of the environment and open space by introducing to our citizens, young and old, to the wonders of our open spaces using the trail systems we have developed as educational tools.........If you wish to take part in the political process, we encourage you to join a party or volunteer to help a candidate.
